TAREKHI RASHIDI OF MIRZA MUHAMMAD HAIDER, DUGHALT

TRAVELS IN THE MUGHALS OF CENTRAL ASIA
TRANSLATED: E. DENISON ROSS EDITED: N. ELIAS
The present work in two volumes is the English Translation of Tarikh-i-Rashidi, written by Mirza Muhammad Haider, Dughlat. The book brings forth an absorbing and informative history of Central Asia. The object of Tarikh-i-Rashidi, as the author tells its readers, is to preserve the memory of Mughals and their Khans. The author, Mirza Haider, has attempted a very minute and firsthand account of the region which reveals it both in depth and on a personal level. The work is an earnest one, and the author, no doubt intended that it should be before everything else, a clear and complete exposition of the times he had set himself to chronicle.
The scope and character of the Tarikh-i-Rashidi may be briefly summarized in the following way. It may be regarded as the history of that branch of the Mughal Khan who separated themselves, about the year 1321, from the main system of the Chaghatai, which was then the ruling dynasty in Transoxiana; and it is the only history known to exist of this branch of the Mughals. The original or western line- that of Transoxiana- was at that time declining in power, and through internal dissensions and administrative decay, was rapidly approaching a final dissolution. The princes of the branch then thrown off, became masters of Mughalistan (or Jatah, as it was called at that period) and of all Eastern Turkistan and continued as a ruling dynasty for more than two and a half centuries.
The book is divided into two parts, called Dafter, the first of which is entirely historical, while the second contains reminiscences of the author life and notices of Chahatai, Uzbeg and other princes, with whom he was acquainted.
The first Part, or history proper, was written in Kashmir in 1544 and 1545. It contains a record of two distinct and parallel dynasties: (1) that of the Khans of Mughalistan, beginning with Tughluk Timur, who reigned from 1347 to 1362, and whose father, Isan Bugha, was the first to separate from the main Chaghatai stem; and (2) of their vassals, the Dughlat Amirs of Eastern Turkistan, on the earliest of whom, Amir Bulaji, the author’s ancestor, had raised Tughluk Timur to the Khanship.
The second Part, which has more than twice the extent of the first, and contains Mirza Haider’s record of his life and times, was the first in point of date. It begins with his birth and concludes with an account of his second invasion of Kashmir, when, by a battle fought on the 02nd August, 1541, he became master of the country. This Part also includes some rules of conduct for Kings, drawn up at the request of the author, by his spiritual guide, Maulana Muhammad Kazi. The book is thus a work great historical importance and would interest historians, explorers, scholars, and general readers.

KASHMIR IN CRUCIBLE BY PREM NATH BAJAJ

Kashmir problem is much older than the accession issue which cropped up in 1947. Ever since the British imperialists sold the valley to Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1846, the problem has presented itself in one shape or another. For over eighty years the Dogra Hindu rulers could contrive to conceal the hideous truth that their subjects, predominant majority of whom was Muslim, were unhappy under their harsh rule. But when in 1931 the Kashmiris rose in open rebellion against the despotism the problem was posed in public for the first time. After independence the issue has in essence remained unchanged, namely the scope of freedom for the State Muslims under majority Hindu rule.
In the long period of over thirty-four years I have had exchange of views on the vexing issue with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawahar Lal Nehru as also a large number of Kashmiri politicians and patriots. From time to time I expressed my views in State affairs in the context of Kashmiri’s historical background and a rising wave of democracy. I tried to elicit the opinions of the great leaders which they stated,at times with candour, in their letters. Those with disagreement with me in Kashmir have subjected my views to a close scrutiny thereby presenting other aspects of the problem with by me. Since this correspondence (comprising selected letters from a big bunch) throws revealing light on the theme of the book, I have decided it as appendices at the end.
In the preparation of this volume I have heavily drawn on the writings of several authors, ancient and modern. I owe a debt of gratitude to all of them.
Prem Nath Bajaj was born in July 1905 at Srinagar. Educated in S.P. College, he took his degree from Punjab University and entered public life in August 1930 by joining the Women’s Welfare Trust. In 1931 he was elected President of the S.D. Yuvat Sabha that year the Maharaja nominated him as a non- official member of the Grievances Enquiry Commission and the Constitutional Reforms Conference. He started the daily Vitasta in 1932 to advocate the cause of Secularism, Democracy and Freedom.
Bazaz is the author of several books including Inside Kashmir (1942), Azad Kashmir (1951) and The History of Struggle for Freedom in Kashmir (1954). He has written a number of treaties and booklets in English and Urdu on Economic, Political, Cultural and social problems of Kashmir.

FOLK – TALES OF KASHMIR BY J.HINTON KNOWLES

Kashmir as a field of folklore literature is, perhaps, not surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world; and yet, while every year witnesses the publication of books on the subject from Bengal, Bombay, Madras, Punjab and other parts; and while each successive number of The Indian Antiquary, Indian Notes and Queries and lately The Christian College Magazine and The Indian Evangelical Review, presents to us articles more or less relevant, this field, ripe for the harvest, has remained almost ungleaned. No doubt its isolated position and the difficulty of its language have had something to do with this apparent neglect. I am more glad, therefore, to have availed myself of the opportunities afforded me through a year’s residency in the valley.
However, I hope the reader will not consider that I suppose the science of folklore should not include Comparative Mythology. On the contrary, I firmly believe that several tales must be attributed to a mythological origin. But I am also as firmly convinced that many tales must be attributed to a historical origin. “What seems to be demanded from every interpreter of old tradition, every explorer of the dark field of popular fiction, is a wariness that will not allow itself to be hoodwinked by any prejudice in favour of this or that particular theory.
I would draw the attention of the folklorists to the notes in connection with these different stories. They have been gathered and arranged with some care, in the hope that they may help the reader to turn up readily to variants of the tales, or of different incidents in the tale. All Kashmiri or Hindustani words have been fully explained – at the end of the page on which they occur; and if they are ordinary, in the Glossary at the end of the book.

SHEIKH MOHAMMAD ABDULLAH – TRAGIC HERO OF KASHMIR BY AJIT BHATTACHARJEA

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah: Tragic Hero of Kashmir is the first comprehensive, well- documented account of the life of the charismatic leader, the Lion of Kashmir, who contributed crucially to the making of modern India in terms of territory and more importantly to its founding ideology of secularism.
Kashmir was the scene of a distinctive political transformation in the late 1930’s. In contrast to the rise of Muslim League in much of the subcontinent – which was to lead to Partition – the most popular party in the valley turned away from communal politics and embraced secularism. On 11 June 1939, Sheikh Abdullah was successful in changing the name of the party he was leading from Kashmir Muslim conference to National Conference.
The author traces the historic developments that followed this unique commitment to secularism inspired by Sheikh Abdullah. It also paved the way for Jammu and Kashmir to accede to India and resist aggression from Pakistan.
Backed by Nehru’s friendship, Abdullah rose to become the first popular prime minister of the state, but also the target of conservative and communal forces in India. His demand that pledge of special status for the state in the accession documents be honored was described as anti – national, even pro – Pakistani.
The intrigue that led to Abdullah’s downfall and arrest on 08 August 1953 is well documented as is the role of the Home Ministry’s Intelligence Bureau. The elaborate conspiracy case it built up was belatedly rejected by Nehru himself. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, the author takes us through Abdullah’s long, tragic periods of detention until he was persuaded to return to Jammu & Kashmir as chief minister. He demonstrated his continuing popularity by winning an election before his death in 1982.
A veteran journalist and former editor of the Hindustan Times and the Indian Express, Ajit Bhattacharjea has covered Kashmir since 1947. He has authored several books including Dateline Bangladesh; Kashmir: The Wounded Valley; Countdown to Partition; and Unfinished revolution: A political Biography of Jayaprakash Narayan.

KASHMIR – ITS CULTURAL HERITAGE BY KAUMUDI

Kashmir has been for centuries the fountainhead of art and culture in the East. At the cross – roads of the ancient caravan routes in Central Asia, Kashmir has been the meeting point of various cultures. In her spacious valleys, she has harmoniously blended their myriad trend to produce a civilization distinctive of her people and her heritage. But Kashmir is more than a civilization. She is an answer to man’s eternal craving for scenic beauty.
It was my great good fortune to have spent several summers in the early years of my life in this picturesque Valley, when I had ample opportunities of trekking far and wide into the interior. This developed in me a deep love and admiration for the lovelier and the happier side of life there. These memories of the early impressionable days were later strengthened by a somewhat detailed and systematic study of Kashmir in all its various phases. This book is an outcome of my admiration and study.

The book aims at presenting the lay- reader with a vivid story of Kashmir’s “achievements” in the spheres of art, learning and literature. From Kashmir’s arts, her handicrafts, her traditional lore, her music, her customs and her ideas, I have attempted to seek the pattern of her artistic and cultural heritage.

At a time when the question of accession of Kashmir to one of the neighbouring countries has assumed an international significance, this cultural aspect of the Kashmir story should not be allowed to go by default. This little book is an attempt to fill in the gap. If, therefore, by a perusal of this book, the reader is able to appreciate and grasp the brighter side of life in this beautiful valley, I shall feel my labour to have been fully rewarded.

THE ISLAMIZATION OF KASHMIR (A STUDY OF MUSLIM MISSIONARIES) BY DR. ALTAF HUSSAIN YATOO

This book is a humble effort on his part to present the endeavor of the Muslim missionaries in the process of The Islamization of Kshmir. Although the main architect of the edifice of Islam in Kashmir has been Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, but the people who poured into the valley prior to him were the trend-setters for hiss missionary work and the ones who followed him furthered and brought to culmination the work undertaken by this Great Sayyid. As such, the book highlights the pivotal role of the Sayyid in the thorough transformation of Kashmir into an Islamic land because he not only enriched the results of his forerunners but also paved the way for his successors. Thus the book is a humble realization of the qard (indebtedness) and fard (obligation) which every Kashmiri Muslim owes to the Sayyid according to Prof. Samsuddin Ahmad, the great biographer of the Sayyid.
Altaf Hussain Yatoo, hailing from Goshbugh, Pattan, Baramulla, North Kashmir, is a Science graduate (from Govt. Degree College, Sopore) with Masters (from University of Kashmir), NET and PhD (from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi) in Islamic Studies besides having PG (from IGNOU) in English.

HATIM’S TALES – KASHMIRI STORIES AND SONGS BY AUREL STEIN - INTRODUCTION: SHAFI SHAUQ

Kashmir, like any other Indian cultural region of India, has its rich tradition of folklore. Hatim’s Tales are a class by themselves in this rich heritage.
A spell-binding story teller. Hatim was a legend in his lifetime. He recited, intoned, sang and talked to his fond listeners in the towns and villages of the picturesque Kashmir Valley. His tales were drawn from history, mythology, traditional narratives and original stories devised by Hatim himself. They were part of the oral tradition which survived in memory and word of the mouth.
Sir Aurel Stein took pains to listen to the legendary Hatim and take down notes. When elaborated and translated for a book, it became a unique collection of folk tales, ballads, folk songs taken straight from the mouth of hereditary storyteller and recite.
The book contains the original in Kashmiri, translation in English, linguistic analysis, vocabulary and index. The modern reader will find in the collection the most authentic account of the Kashmiri folklore ever recorded. It is sheer pleasure to read them and enjoy their down to earth wit and wisdom.
Sir Mark Aurel Stein was born on November 26, in 1862 in Budapest, (Hungary). After getting his doctoral degree in 1884, he went to the Oxford University where he continued his studies in the field. In 1885 he was appointed as the Registrar of the Punjab University and the Principal of the Oriental College Lahore. THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF KASMIRA SAIVISM BY MOTI LAL PANDIT - A STUDY OF TRIKA THOUGHT AND PRACTICE

The philosophical thought of Trika Saivism of Kashmir adumbrates a new dawn in the religious as well as philosophical history of India. It is so rich in its metaphysical thought as to be universal on account of it being open- minded and synthetic. It recognizes the validity of philosophical thought of every school to the extent that the truth is apprehended and recognized. It is because of this synthetic approach that Trika Saivism has successfully wedded realism with idealism. It is idealistic to the extent that it maintains that the world is nothing but the emanation of consciousness. It is realistic to the measure that it concludes that the emanation of the objective world is real. It rejects the Vedantic view of the Absolute as being mere light of consciousness. Instead, it speaks of the Absolute as being both the light of consciousness as well as cognitive self- awareness. It is on the basis of this philosophical thought that Trika thinkers have equated the Absolute with absolute Freedom. Thus, the Absolute of Trika is not an inactive or impersonal principle, but it is an absolutism that has theistic orientation characterized by Freedom. Above all, it gave birth to a new school of philosophy, namely, the Pratyabhijna School.
Moti Lal Pandit, trained as a theologian and linguist, has been engaged in Indological research for the last thirty years. He has published articles as well as books on a vast range of subjects. Initially, he began his research in Vedic religion and philosophy. Gradually, he shifted his attention towards Buddhism and as a result of this shift; he has been successful in publishing a number of books on Buddhism philosophy and history. For the last several years however he is fully engaged in the study of Trika Saivism of Kashmir. Some of his publications: Vedic Hinduism, The Essentials of Buddhist Thought, Sankara’s concept of Reality, Buddhism in Perspective, Being as Becoming, Towards Transcendence, The Buddhist theory of knowledge and Reality, from Dualism to Non Dualism.

MYSTICISM IN SHAIVISM AND CHRISTIANITY EDITED BY BETTINA BAUMER

If mysticism is hard to define, what is it then? Or, why have mystics often spoken about what they have realized – notwithstanding the ‘unspeakability’ of a spiritual experience? And, yet more significantly, how can a meeting point of different religious traditions be discovered at the mystical level? Focusing on these and other related questions, eminent scholars from varying religious traditions here explore the nature of mystical experience in two of the world’s major traditions: Hinduism and Christianity.
Neither a comparative study of religious traditions, nor an attempt to develop overall mystical theology, the book sets out spiritual dialogue Saiva and Christian mysticism: a dialogue wherein the participants articulate world-views of the mystical traditions of Saiva Siddhanta, Kashmir Saivism, Meister Eckhart, Hadewijch, Julian of Norwich, St. Ignatius Loyola and of the Eastern Christianity. And, without taking any a priori intellectual position, each author here evolves his/her own tradition- specific perspective on mysticism – letting the comparison, if any, to surface in the dialogue itself.
A spiritual dialogue, like the ones this work embodies, holds a key to an insightful understanding between different people, cultures and faiths – more specially in today’s world rive, as it is, by fundamentalist forces and endless religious conflicts.
The book will be valuable acquisition for scholars and spiritual interested readers alike.
Bettina Baumer, Austrian by birth, is a widely known Indologist, author and scholar, with a versatility of research concerns: ranging from Kashmir Saivism to Oriya religious traditions, from Siplasastras to Indian temple architecture. Settled at Varanasi, India, since 1967, she was Research Director of the Alice Boner Foundation (Varanasi) and Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at Vienna University. And as President since 1988, of the Abhishiktananda Society, she has been engaged in interreligious dialogue with focused interest in comparative mysticism.
Besides her German translations of Yoga- sutra, Upanisads and Abhinavagupta, Dr Baumer has also edited and authored a number of books which notably include Volumes 1-3 of Kalatattvakosa, Rupa Pratirupa, Vastusutra Upanisad, Void and Fullness in the Buddhist, Hindu and Christian Traditions and Silparatnakosa.
