Kashmir is an ancient principality. In the Puranas, it is mentioned by the name of Gerek, which means a hill. The Mahabharta and the Budhist literature refer to it as Kasmira, while the Mulasarvastivada Vinnaya calls it Kasmira – Mandala. For the Greeks (Ptolemy), it was kasperiria. Some scholars believe Herodoo – Yeng and Sun – Yan (6th century A.D). Hieun – Tsang (7th century A.D) calls it Kia-shih-mi-lo.Khachal and kashrat are the names given to it by the Tibetans and the Dards respectively.The ancient Kashmiris themselves called their country as Kashmira which later shortened to Kashmir.
Dr. M.L Kapur was born at Jammu on October 17, 1929. After graduating from the local Price of Wales College, he obtained his M.A Degrees in Economics and History from the Punjab University.
He started his career in the Education Department of the Education Department of the Jammu and Kashmir Government Colleges at Sopur, Kathua and Udhampur. In 1965 he joined the Post- Graduate Department of the University of Jammu, and has been working there since. He got his Ph.D, degree also from this University.
