SARADA AN TAKARI ALPHABETS – ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT BY BHUSHAN KUMAR KAUL DEAMBI
Among the Indian scripts
the Sarada script has a pride of place. Though an alphabet of Kashmir per
excellence it remained for several centuries a popular script of an extensive
area of north – western India including Afganistan, Gandhara or north- western
Pakistan, the Darad territories of Gilgit, Chilas and Chitral, Ladakh, Jammu,
Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The epigraphic and literary records written in the
Sarada script that have surfaced in these regions have thrown welcome light on
many facets of the history and culture of the area of their provenance. Nearly
the entire extant manuscripts of Sanskrit works including those on science,
mathematics and erotic besides some old Kashmiri texts are written in this
script.
The Sarada alphabet was
replaced in the 13th century by its descendent, the Devasesa, which
in turn gave rise to the modern alphabet of Takari. The epigraphic, literary
and other valuable documents of Himachal Pradesh available are mostly written
in Devasesa and Takari. But it is sad that the number of scholars having a
sound knowledge of the Sarada and Takari scripts is extremely small. There is
every apprehension of the complete loss of these two scripts unless serious
measures are taken to disseminate the knowledge under the guidance of the
epigraphy stalwart to our younger generation of scholars.
The entire study of the
present work is based on original records and is comprehensively illustrated by
palaeographic tables and charts prepared from published facsimilies,
photographs, and original inscriptions and manuscripts. To give an idea of the
records written in these two scripts, printed photographs of the inscriptions,
manuscripts, documents etc. have been given at the end of the book.
It is hoped that the
book would serve as a guide and an aid for the scholars interested in the study
of the important and valuable records written in Sarada and Takari scripts
which are otherwise preserved in museums and libraries in India and abroad.
Dr. B.K Kaul Deambi, born on 01st
February 1937 in Srinagar, obtained his Masters degrees with distinction in
Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology; and also in Sanskrit from
Punjab University. He further completed his PhD from there under the guidance
of the epigraphy stalwart of northern India Prof. Jagan Nath Agrawal. He worked
as Professor of Sanskrit and Hindi in Gandhi Memorial College, Srinagar; rose
to become Reader and then Director for the centre of Central Asian Studies,
Kashmir University. He was finally visiting faculty member in the Department of
History, Kumaun University. His works includes corpus of the Sarada
inscriptions of Kashmir, History and Culture of Ancient Gandhara and Western
Himalayas, both of which were awarded by the Academy of Art, Culture and Languages,
Jammu and Kashmir State. He was awarded Senior Fellowship in Epigraphy by the
Department of Culture, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Govt. of India for
writing the current work. His ensuing publications include Studies in Indian
Epigraphy containing author’s selected papers on Indian epigraphy published in
reputed journals and books; and catalogue (Vol. I) of the Sanskrit manuscripts
preserved in the Manuscripts Libraries, Museums and Archaeology, Jammu and
Kashmir, Srinagar

Prof.
Abdul Ghani, an eminent writer, a distinguished poet of English, Urdu, Persian
and Punjabi, a renowned of his book, was born in 1954 in Bhaun, a neighbouring
town of Islamabad, in a learned family. He has gained remarkable achievements
in his educational career. A glimpse of his educational excellence can be seen
from the fact that he has obtained five degrees of M.A English (literature),
TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Persian, Urdu and History – all
with distinctions. He did M.Phil in Iqbal Studies and subsequently acquired the
honor of Ph.D in the same University, Islamabad. He has been awarded Iqbal Award (2001) on his doctoral thesis – ‘An

practiced in the Muslim society by the Sufi Masters, long before Dr. Ushi’s
birth, who is regarded as the father of this wonderful healing system. On this
invaluable research, Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghani has been awarded a Gold medal by the
University of Colombo.
In
the present volume, his first thesis of Ph.D is being presented for the readers
of Iqbal in book form, which will probably turn out to be a precious asset in
the world of Iqbal. Bazm-i-iqbal offers this book to the world of erudition
with a deepest sense of pride.

KALHANA’S RAJATARANGINI – THE SAGA OF THE KINGS OF KASHMIR
KALHANA’S Rajatarangini
is not only a classic of Sanskrit narrative poetry but it is the earliest
extant history of Kashmir. Written in the middle of the 12th
century, in the age when the Crusades of Europe were fighting in Western Asia,
Kalhana’s masterpiece is a unique blend of authentic chronicle and imaginative
poetry inspired by the poet’s passionate love of his exquisitely beautiful
homeland.
This famous English
translation by R.S Pandit was first published in 1935. It was out of print for
many years until the Sahitya Akademi published a reprint in 1968. It was
further reprinted in 1977. The Akademi is happy to make available this fifth
impression of its reprint. Except for minor typographical corrections, the
text, Introduction, Foreword and the learned translator’s copious notes are
retained exactly as in the original edition.
The Sahitya Akademi is
grateful to Srimati Vijaya Laxmi Pandit for permission to publish this edition
of which the royalties she has graciously donated to the Prime Minister’s
children’s fund.

SAIVISM AND THE PHALLIC WORLD BY B.BHATTACHARYA
The present work deals exclusively with an area of profound
mystic enquiry of perpetual interest. The secrets of the sacred East which had
so far succeeded I drawing only limited interest among interested scholars
appears to have, of late, exploded a popular interest. Naturally, a study of
the actual bases of Saivism involves a close study of man’s preoccupations with
the subject of sex on the one hand, and of divine inspiration on the other.
Religions of East and West of the ancients and moderns which have left us
absorbing and interesting records of man’s dive into the ocean of divine
mystery and which have never been found missing in claiming the supreme
intellectual and spiritual application of the human mind, have been placed
under a scholarly scrutiny, which makes this work a remarkable contribution to
the library of comparative religion. In fact to deal with Saivism is to deal
with Hinduism in all its aspects; and to deal with the vexed subject of the
worship of sex – organs is to enter into the very complex arena of primitive
religions and their traditional cultural forms. This popular misconception of
equating Saivism with Phallicism compels us to make a thorough study of the
subject on the basis of comparative religion.
B. Bhattacharya, born in 1910 in Varanasi, received his
first education in traditional ‘toles’ in Sanskrit and further did M.A
(English) from Allahabad University. He has spent the best period of his life
as an educationist in Guyana and Trinidad (West Indies). At present he lectures
on comparative religion and Indian culture to Western audiences.
His work The World of
Tantra is a unique contribution to Tantric tradition. Bhattacharya has been
a reputed writer in Bengali prose and poetry, novels, stories, travelogues and
belles-letters (in all 30 tiltles). His forthcoming works include Varanasi
Rediscovered.

ABHINAVAGUPTA’S HERMENEUTICS OF THE ABSOLUTE ANUTTARAPRAKRIYA BY BETTINA BAUMER
The Paratrisika Vivarana
by the great Kashmiri philosopher and mystic Abhinavagupta is an extensive
commentary on the Paratrisika Tantra, and it is one of the most profound texts,
not only of non- dualist Kashmir Saivism, but of Indian philosophy and
mysticism in general. The present work attempts to make this difficult text
accessible, by calling out the important themes and offering an interpretation.
The main focus is on the understanding of the Absolute (Anuttara) and the ways
to realize it. The central theme of mantra also leads to a mysticism of
language with its philosophical implications. All these reflections and
practices are inscribed in the theory that “everything is related to the totality”,
“every part contains the whole of reality” (sarvam sarvatmakam). It is this
holistic vision of Abhinavagupta, based on the Tantras, which makes this work
so relevant in our times of fragmented aspects of life and knowledge in search
of integration. No doubt, in the view of the Tantra and of Abhinavagupta,
language and mantra provide the key.
This fascinating book is
an important contribution to studies and interpretations on Kashmir Saivism,
its spirituality and philosophy and on Abhinavagupta in particular.
Dr. Bettina Baumer,
indologist from Austria and Professor of Religious Studies (Visiting Professor
at several universities), living and working in Varanasi since 1967, is the

temple architecture and religious traditions of Orissa, and comparative
mysticism. She has been Coordinator of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for
the Arts, Varanasi, and Fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. She
has been translated important Sanskrit texts into German and English.

TAREKHI RASHIDI OF MIRZA MUHAMMAD HAIDER, DUGHALT
TRAVELS IN THE MUGHALS OF CENTRAL ASIA
TRANSLATED: E. DENISON ROSS EDITED: N. ELIAS
The present work in two
volumes is the English Translation of Tarikh-i-Rashidi, written by Mirza
Muhammad Haider, Dughlat. The book brings forth an absorbing and informative
history of Central Asia. The object of Tarikh-i-Rashidi, as the author tells
its readers, is to preserve the memory of Mughals and their Khans. The author,
Mirza Haider, has attempted a very minute and firsthand account of the region
which reveals it both in depth and on a personal level. The work is an earnest
one, and the author, no doubt intended that it should be before everything
else, a clear and complete exposition of the times he had set himself to
chronicle.
The scope and character
of the Tarikh-i-Rashidi may be briefly summarized in the following way. It may
be regarded as the history of that branch of the Mughal Khan who separated
themselves, about the year 1321, from the main system of the Chaghatai, which
was then the ruling dynasty in Transoxiana; and it is the only history known to
exist of this branch of the Mughals. The original or western line- that of
Transoxiana- was at that time declining in power, and through internal
dissensions and administrative decay, was rapidly approaching a final
dissolution. The princes of the branch then thrown off, became masters of
Mughalistan (or Jatah, as it was called at that period) and of all Eastern
Turkistan and continued as a ruling dynasty for more than two and a half
centuries.
The book is divided into
two parts, called Dafter, the first of which is entirely historical, while the
second contains reminiscences of the author life and notices of Chahatai, Uzbeg
and other princes, with whom he was acquainted.
The first Part, or
history proper, was written in Kashmir in 1544 and 1545. It contains a record
of two distinct and parallel dynasties: (1) that of the Khans of Mughalistan,
beginning with Tughluk Timur, who reigned from 1347 to 1362, and whose father,
Isan Bugha, was the first to separate from the main Chaghatai stem; and (2) of
their vassals, the Dughlat Amirs of Eastern Turkistan, on the earliest of whom,
Amir Bulaji, the author’s ancestor, had raised Tughluk Timur to the Khanship.
The second Part, which
has more than twice the extent of the first, and contains Mirza Haider’s record
of his life and times, was the first in point of date. It begins with his birth
and concludes with an account of his second invasion of Kashmir, when, by a
battle fought on the 02nd August, 1541, he became master of the
country. This Part also includes some rules of conduct for Kings, drawn up at
the request of the author, by his spiritual guide, Maulana Muhammad Kazi. The
book is thus a work great historical importance and would interest historians,
explorers, scholars, and general readers.

KASHMIR IN CRUCIBLE BY PREM NATH BAJAJ
Kashmir problem is much older than the accession issue which
cropped up in 1947. Ever since the British imperialists sold the valley to
Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1846, the problem has presented itself in one shape or
another. For over eighty years the Dogra Hindu rulers could contrive to conceal
the hideous truth that their subjects, predominant majority of whom was Muslim,
were unhappy under their harsh rule. But when in 1931 the Kashmiris rose in
open rebellion against the despotism the problem was posed in public for the
first time. After independence the issue has in essence remained unchanged,
namely the scope of freedom for the State Muslims under majority Hindu rule.
In the long period of over thirty-four years I have had
exchange of views on the vexing issue with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and
Jawahar Lal Nehru as also a large number of Kashmiri politicians and patriots.
From time to time I expressed my views in State affairs in the context of
Kashmiri’s historical background and a rising wave of democracy. I tried to
elicit the opinions of the great leaders which they stated,at times with
candour, in their letters. Those with disagreement with me in Kashmir have
subjected my views to a close scrutiny thereby presenting other aspects of the
problem with by me. Since this correspondence (comprising selected letters from
a big bunch) throws revealing light on the theme of the book, I have decided it
as appendices at the end.
In the preparation of this volume I have heavily drawn on
the writings of several authors, ancient and modern. I owe a debt of gratitude
to all of them.
Prem Nath Bajaj was born in July 1905 at Srinagar. Educated
in S.P. College, he took his degree from Punjab University and entered public
life in August 1930 by joining the Women’s Welfare Trust. In 1931 he was
elected President of the S.D. Yuvat Sabha that year the Maharaja nominated him
as a non- official member of the Grievances Enquiry Commission and the Constitutional
Reforms Conference. He started the daily Vitasta in 1932 to advocate the cause
of Secularism, Democracy and Freedom.
Bazaz is the author of several books including Inside
Kashmir (1942), Azad Kashmir (1951) and The History of Struggle for Freedom in
Kashmir (1954). He has written a number of treaties and booklets in English and
Urdu on Economic, Political, Cultural and social problems of Kashmir.

FOLK – TALES OF KASHMIR BY J.HINTON KNOWLES
Kashmir as a field of folklore literature is, perhaps, not
surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world; and yet, while every
year witnesses the publication of books on the subject from Bengal, Bombay,
Madras, Punjab and other parts; and while each successive number of The Indian
Antiquary, Indian Notes and Queries and lately The Christian College Magazine
and The Indian Evangelical Review, presents to us articles more or less
relevant, this field, ripe for the harvest, has remained almost ungleaned. No
doubt its isolated position and the difficulty of its language have had
something to do with this apparent neglect. I am more glad, therefore, to have
availed myself of the opportunities afforded me through a year’s residency in
the valley.
However, I hope the reader will not consider that I suppose
the science of folklore should not include Comparative Mythology. On the contrary,
I firmly believe that several tales must be attributed to a mythological
origin. But I am also as firmly convinced that many tales must be attributed to
a historical origin. “What seems to be demanded from every interpreter of old
tradition, every explorer of the dark field of popular fiction, is a wariness
that will not allow itself to be hoodwinked by any prejudice in favour of this
or that particular theory.
I would draw the attention of the folklorists to the notes
in connection with these different stories. They have been gathered and
arranged with some care, in the hope that they may help the reader to turn up
readily to variants of the tales, or of different incidents in the tale. All
Kashmiri or Hindustani words have been fully explained – at the end of the page
on which they occur; and if they are ordinary, in the Glossary at the end of
the book.

SHEIKH MOHAMMAD ABDULLAH – TRAGIC HERO OF KASHMIR BY AJIT BHATTACHARJEA
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah: Tragic Hero of Kashmir is the
first comprehensive, well- documented account of the life of the charismatic
leader, the Lion of Kashmir, who contributed crucially to the making of modern
India in terms of territory and more importantly to its founding ideology of
secularism.
Kashmir was the scene of a distinctive political
transformation in the late 1930’s. In contrast to the rise of Muslim League in
much of the subcontinent – which was to lead to Partition – the most popular
party in the valley turned away from communal politics and embraced secularism.
On 11 June 1939, Sheikh Abdullah was successful in changing the name of the
party he was leading from Kashmir Muslim conference to National Conference.
The author traces the historic developments that followed
this unique commitment to secularism inspired by Sheikh Abdullah. It also paved
the way for Jammu and Kashmir to accede to India and resist aggression from Pakistan.
Backed by Nehru’s friendship, Abdullah rose to become the
first popular prime minister of the state, but also the target of conservative
and communal forces in India. His demand that pledge of special status for the
state in the accession documents be honored was described as anti – national,
even pro – Pakistani.
The intrigue that led to Abdullah’s downfall and arrest on
08 August 1953 is well documented as is the role of the Home Ministry’s
Intelligence Bureau. The elaborate conspiracy case it built up was belatedly
rejected by Nehru himself. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, the author
takes us through Abdullah’s long, tragic periods of detention until he was
persuaded to return to Jammu & Kashmir as chief minister. He demonstrated his
continuing popularity by winning an election before his death in 1982.
A veteran journalist and former editor of the Hindustan
Times and the Indian Express, Ajit Bhattacharjea has covered Kashmir since
1947. He has authored several books including Dateline Bangladesh; Kashmir: The
Wounded Valley; Countdown to Partition; and Unfinished revolution: A political
Biography of Jayaprakash Narayan.
