THE AWAKENING OF SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS

Lectures of Swami Lakshman Joo - Recorded, translated and edited by  Jankinath Kaul "Kamal"

In the early twentieth century the Kashmir of past glory was blessed with a son who practiced and lived the wonderful philosophy of the Triaka Saiva of Kashmir known as Pratyabhijna Darsana. Swami Lakshman Joo  disseminated the postulates of this philosophy through his teachings and writings among the seekers of Truth.
Swamiji chose to deliver a series of seven talks from April to July 1980 at the Sunday meetings which were open to all. The purpose of this series of talks was to acquaint the devotees with preliminary disciplines and esoteric expressions concerning the Kasmir Saiva mystic philosophy because the texts were not always easily comprehensible to all.
Amongst his devout disciples Pandit Jankinath Kaul ‘Kamal’ recorded these talks which were originally delivered in Kashmiri , to the best of his capacity with great faith, sincerity and the love for learning . “Nothing has been left out’ – had expressed Swamiji himself on seeing the manuscript of originally recorded material along with its English translation by “Kamal”.
The present edition contains the same English translation of the lectures delivered by Swami Lakshamjoo Joo. The translator has appended a brief life-sketch of Swamiji, besides adding the discourses on advanced topics of Saivism delivered by Swamiji in English viz. (1) Vatulanatha- Sutras, (2) The Essence of Abhinavagupta’s commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, (3) Kundalini- Vijnana – Rashasyam. Two appendices include sayings of Swami Laksham Joo and the text of Kundalini Rashasyam. The concluding appendix is the Pranamanjali to Swamiji by Pt. Jankinath Kauk ‘Kamal’

Pandit Jankinath Kaul ‘Kamal’ was one of the earliest disciples of the Saiva saint Swami Lakshman Joo of Kashmir. “Kamal” was an epitome of a gentle and a sobre soul. His radiant face emitted spiritual luster and effulgence. His distinguished contributions in the field of promoting our rich tradition through his writings of erudite explanations and translations of the texts will stand as monuments to inspire the posterity. In the present volume the oral tradition of Kasmir Saivism has been recorded for the benefit of the seekers of Truth.
The recipient of President’s award for his outstanding contributions in the field of Sanskrit studies, Pandit Kaul has received several other awards for the recognition of his writing in other languages viz. Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu and English.

BHAGAVAD GITA – IN LIGHT OF KASHMIR SHAIVISM WITH ORIGINAL AUDIO REVEALED BY SWAMI LAKSHMANJOO

In this Gitartha- Sangraha (Bhagavad Gita), Abhinavagupta has tried to discuss and solve the problems of life in the Light of the Lord’s Song.
What is the main purpose in our life here? Why is our mind torn by conflicting duties and loyalties..?
These are the very difficult questions he sets out to solve in this commentary.
The freedom from all our miseries, he very boldly and emphatically declares, can neither be obtained through the renunciation of the world, nor by hatred towards this world, but by feeling the presence of God everywhere, which is the innermost centre of each and every object.

Swami Lakshmanjoo was born in Srinagar, Kashmir on May09, 1907. He was the last and greatest of the saints and masters of the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism.
Having a deep understanding of the philosophy and practices of Kashmir Shaivism, he was like a splendid and rare jewel.
Beginning from childhood he spent his whole life studying and practicing the teachings of this unique sacred tradition.Because of his intellectual power and strength of awareness, he realized both spiritual and intellectually the reality of its thought.

THE TRIKA SAIVISM OF KASHMIR BY MOTI LAL PANDIT

The importance of Kashmir Saivism lies in the fact that an independent school of Saivism, with its own specific ethos and orientation, emerged from the soil of Kashmir during the eighth century of our era, which till the end of twelfth century made great strides both philosophically and theologically. The type of Saivism that emerged during the eighth century is deeply rooted in the religious outlook of Tantrism. It is the Tantric religious outlook which has served as the substratum for the flowering of various schools of Saivism, and which ultimately terminated in the rise of such philosophical schools as the Spanda and the Pratyabhijna.

The author of the book has made every attempt at explaining as comprehensively as possible the complex theoretical thinking of the Trika. The Trika, although non- dualistic in orientation, does not obliterate the existence of the person, and that is why it accepts Reality as being of the nature of I-consciousness. According to Trika, Reality is both prakasta and vimarsa and so the world we live is an actual manifest condition of the Absolute. Also its theology of divine kenosis discloses that God is not far away from us, but as light of consciousness constitutes our essential nature.
Moti Lal Pandit, being a Kashmiri Pandit, had the opportunity of studying the philosophical and tantric traditions of Trika from various teachers both in and outside the Valley. Trained as a theologian and in modern humanities and classical languages, he has accordingly been the communicator of today’s Hinduism and Buddhism when they encounter the modern world.

THE MAHARAJA OF KASHMIR BY JOGENDRA CHANDRA BOSE

A VINDICATION AND AN APPEAL
It is an appeal and vindication made to His Excellency Viceroy of India, an exposition of the affairs of Kashmir. The whole object has been to state plainly the just case of the Maharaja and to press it upon the attention of His Excellency the Viceroy. The maharaja has suffered too long already and it will rebound to the lasting glory of Lord Lansdowne if, before leaving India, he reverses the doom with which Highness was visited four years and a half ago.

As a loyal subject of the British Government, the author cannot be indifferent to Imperial interest with which the welfare of the country is indissolubly mixed. These interests must have precedence over every other consideration, but is convinced that the reinstatement of the Maharaja will only serve to promote those interests instead of damaging them in anyway. This conviction and the justice of the Maharaja’s cause have emboldened the author to write this ‘vindication and appeal’.

FROM DUALISM TO NON- DUALISM BY MOTI LAL PANDIT

A STUDY OF THE EVOLUTION OF SAIVITE THOUGHT
The religious history of India has expressed itself in terms of what has come to be known as the Great Tradition and the Little Tradition. It is the synthesis of these two traditions that has given rise, through the process of evolution, to the present-day Hinduism. It is with this absorptive spirit of Hinduism with which this book deals by pointing out as to how Saivism, though belongings to the Little Tradition, has evolved as part and parcel of Brahmanism, Saivism at the same time  has maintained its personal identity in terms of its scriptures and spiritual practices. Although a part of Brahmanism, yet Saivism itself has so evolved in terms of metaphysical thought as to parallel the larger pattern of metaphysical thought of Hinduism in general. Thus the Saivite thought, while following the metaphysical footprints of Brahmanism, ultimately has climaxed in the non-dualism recognitive philosophy of the Trika.

Moti Lal Pandit, a linguist and theologian, has been engaged in Indological research for last three decades. He has contributed more than three hundred papers on Comparative Religion, Theology, Spirituality and Mysticism. Some of his earlier works include The Fundamentals of Buddhism: Samkara’s Concept of reality: Towards Transcendence; Being as becoming: Transcendence and Negation; The Trika Saivism of Kashmir; Sunyata; The essence of Mahayana Spirituality; Buddhism: A Religion of Salvation; Disclosure of Being; Encounter with Buddhism; An Introduction to the Philosophy of Trika Saivism; and The Buddhist View of knowledge and Reality.

THE ORPHAN - A NOVEL BASED ON KASHMIR BY SHAHEEN MOHAMMAD ASHRAF

“Orphan” is a true story of three boys, who are brought up by their maternal aunt. It is a story of an average Kashmiri household. Although focus of the story is three boys, but I tried to depict life as it existed in early fifties. Details of Kashmiri culture, especially marriage ceremony etc. is described in lucid detail. Initial chapters of book were written in the late nineties, because of official engagements, I could not complete the book till 2005. Almost all events in the book such as Jana paying visit to her cousin in the country side are based on real events. Most of chapters especially initial ones were written with full feedback from main character of late Jana. I hope readers will like the book and that will be my greatest satisfaction.

Shaheen Mohammad Ashraf was born in Ganai Hamam Mohalla in old town Baramulla in December 1969. Studied in government school and passed matric examination from Government High School Dewanbagh, Baramulla. Graduated from Kashmir University in 1988. He was appointed as Teacher in 1990 and also worked as Free- lance writer for some time, before qualifying KAS, 1999; Examination. He has worked as Treasury Officer, Revenue Officer as well as District Fund Officer and is currently FA/CPA & OJKSPDC Srinagar.

THE MARKHOR SPORT: IN KASHMIR BY COUNT HANS VON KOENIGSMARCK

We have left the Alps behind us-a long climb, but finished at last- and now here we are suddenly transplanted to that beautiful garden called Kashmir- the Indian Italy, a land breathing of Romeo and Juliet.
We have made our entry at Baramula, where the Jhelum, the Hydaspes of the ancients, leaves its silent, grassy banks to fall headlong into the plains of the Punjab, becoming ever wilder as it leaps from rock to rock. How quietly it flows here through the valley between its smiling banks! A feeling of warmth and peace steals over our senses. Sweet-scented carpets literally spread themselves out before our astonished eyes- the whole valley is one moving mass of bursting bloom in the June haze. What a sparkling, laughing, enticing world! Nature here draws her resources from the deep wells of life’s eternity.

These lines are written in the hope that, after their perusal, the visitor to “The Vale”, or to other parts of the Himalayas, may not feel himself so entirely at the mercy of his Shikari, who too often consults his own comfort and visits spots where he and the villagers can play into one another’s hands and neglects localities where the best bags are to be obtained.
The object, therefore, is not to write a book of adventures, but to give accurate measurements, the names of the best shooting grounds and such hints as are likely to prove useful to the inexperienced traveler in the hills and ravines of the Himalayas and amongst the sterile mountains and plains of Ladakh and Middle Thibet.

KASHMIR – THE LAND OF STREAMS & SOLITUDES BY P. PIRIE

THERE are other roads in Kashmir; roads like colonnades between serried ranks of poplar trees, the tall, slim, silvery pillars of the beautiful populous alba, or the somber stateliness of the dark poplars of Lombardy; roads bordered by willows, or leading through marshy meadow – land, or carpeted with snowy petals from the blossoming branches of apple and pear and cherry trees, which make fragment archways overhead; many and lovely are the roads of the Valley; but the road par excellence of Kashmir is the River, the Veth as the Kashmiris call it, which is an abbreviation of Vitasta, its Sanskrit name, the fabulous Hydaspes of the classic historians.

Up and down the wide and placid river go the flat-bottomed, slow-moving boats of the country- the wide grain-barges, the doongas with their roofs and sides of matting, the deep- laden market boats, and the little fishing –boats so often drawn up near the bank with a wide net outspread, its wet meshes glittering in the sunshine like a dragon-fly’s wing.

HANDBOOK OF THE PUNJAB KASHMIR AND UPPER SINDH BY JOHN MURRAY AND EDWARD B EASTWICK

This fourth volume, with the preceding Handbooks of Madras, Bombay, and Bengal, completes the Handbook of India. The reader, who may detect inaccuracies, will it is hoped be good enough to consider the vast amount of labour required by so extensive a work. When the subject was mentioned to Lord Lytton, he observed that such a work in point of magnitude was like writing a Handbook of Europe, and it may be said that in addition to the time occupied in preparing the first editions of the Handbooks of Madras and Bombay, the Author has devoted six years to visiting all parts of India, and to the studies required for the whole undertaking.
This volume is intended to guide the traveler to and through a great part of Rajputana and those northern provinces of India, which are directly or indirectly ruled by the Lientenant –Governor of the Panjab. They cover an area several thousand miles greater than that of Germany. No territory in the world of equal extent possesses so great a variety of scenery, beginning from the vast plains round Delhi, and bordering the Five Rivers, and ending with the towering heights of the abode of snow, where for example the Nanga Parwat, one of the highest mountains known to man, rises to an altitude of 26, 629 ft. or more.
John Murray (1808 – 1892) continued the publishinh business of his grandparents which was one of the most influential Publishing House in Britain. He started the Murray Handbook series in 1836, a series of travel guides from which modern day guides are directly descended.
His successor Sir john Murray IV (1851-1928) was publisher to Queen Victoria.

KASHMIR & KASHGHAR BY H.W.BELLEW

The region lying immediately beyond the northern frontier of our Indian Empire and comprehensively designated Chinese Tartary, has during the last quarter of a century, from time to time, attaracted the attention of Europe, owing to the steady extension of the Russian dominion upon its northern borders.
This attention, at no time very fixed upon the mind of the public, received a fresh impetus by the events and issues of that remarkable revolution which in 1862-63 severed the connection of this region from the rest of Chinese Empire and in the following years led to the conquest of its southern portion by a successful adventurer from an adjoining principality.
It has now for us acquired special interest, no less by reason of the intercourse which, in the efforts to develop a trade in that direction, has sprung up between us in India and ruler of this newly –constituted state of Central Asia, than by that of the peculiar relations in which he stands to his Russian neighbor. And the questions naturally arise – what is the new principality of Kashghar ? And who is its founder Atalik Ghazi?
It is not my purpose in these pages to enter on the theme pages to enter on theme of Central Asian politics, nor to attempt an investigation of the causes which have conduced to the successful establishment of a new Muslim state on the ruins of the Chinese rule in this part of the Asiatic Continent: nor yet to inquire into the motives for the revival of a decayed Islam in this extreme limit of the Muslim polity of Central Asia.
Neither is it any part of my purpose in these pages to discuss the merits, or question the wisdom of one line of policy over another, in respect to the relations we are force of neighborhood involved in with the several states of Central Asia.

THE GARDEN OF MYSTIC ROSE TRANSLATED BY ABU NAYEEM ULLAH ALI MOHAMMAD

SELECTED POEMS OF SHEIKH NOOR – UD - DIN- NOORANI
To translate the complete poetical works of the Saint Scholar as well as the enlightened one is a challenging task. This sort of creation is classical in nature. Its language is not altogether easy and to the tone of present day Kashmiri language. Contextual substance is quite mystic, spiritual, moralistic and ethical.
Experiences and observations of the Saint Scholar are subjective and idealistic. Hence to translate in English vis-à-vis Abu Nayeem Ullah’s version in Urdu, is a serious task to be done with regard to Kalami Sheikh-ul-Aalam (RA) in present day of world of literacy advancement.
Master Ali Mohammad, born in old Kala-e- Bazar,Charari Shrief, was raised in the vicinity of the Shrine of Sheikh-ul-Aalam (RA).
He belongs to an intellectual family. As an outcome of his years of study on the life and teachings of Sheikh-ul-Aalam (RA), he wrote two books, which as expected were accepted by people with an overwhelming response.

THE BRITISH DOMINIONS OF INDIA – BY VICTOR JACQUEMONT TIBET, LAHORE AND KASHMIR

LETTERS FROM INDIA
In giving an English translation of Victor Jacquemont’s letters to his family and friends, during his travels in India, we shall endeavour to supply a great defect in the French edition of this work, by stating a few particulars of the life of this interesting young victim to science, prior to his departure for those shores where he was doomed to find a premature grave. We shall also add those documents which we consider necessary to complete his correspondence.
Victor Jacquemont was born at Paris in 1801. His father,  man held in the highest estimation, is a philosopher of the Tracy school, and  a writer of no ordinary power on those psychological speculations to which a long intercourse of friendship with Destutt de Tracy had probably directed his mind. He has two sons besides Victor: the lder in the army, the younger a merchant at Hayti. The three brothers received an excellent education: such a one, in short, as may be given in the public institution of France, where instruction is not limited to knowledge of the ancient classics, but combines with them that practical and scientific information which renders a man a useful member of society.
Jacquemont travelled to India in 1828, and remained there for the rest of his life. He Visited Amber in Rajputana, met with the Sikh Emperor Ranjit Singhat his capital of Lahore, and visited the kingdom of Ladakh in the Himalaya. He also visited Bardhaman (Burdwan) in Bengal in November 1829. He died of disease in Bombay on December 07,1832.
