THE KARAKORAM AND KASHMIR BY OSCAR ECKENSTEIN

The Karakoram or the silk route which connects Kashmir with Central Asia had been a favorite highway of traders who used to bring all sorts of merchandise to the valley from the times immemorial. The book is based on the notes and the letters the author wrote while starting from Srinagar to the highest peak. The expedition was this: Starting from Srinagar, the expedition was to go via Skardu to Askole and there in the first instance attempt the ascent of the peak Mungo Gusor, the central position of which makes it particularly valuable as a point of view for topographical purposes. After this we were to ascend the Baltoro Glacier, attempting thence to ascend peaks particularly K2, and to explore passes. We were then to pay a short visit to the Punmah Lacier, and thereafter attempt to reach the top of the Zong La, the old pass formerly used as a route between Hunza and Nagyr and Skardu by native tribesmen. We were then to descend for some distance down the great Hispar Glaicer, and then turn South and come over the Nushik La to Arandu.

OUR SUMMER IN THE VALE OF KASHMIR BY F. WARD DENYS

With all that has been said and sung of the Vale of Kashmir, its very name brings to the mind visions of a far- away land of transcendent beauty and charm, a kingdom of romance. To some, it is a name to conjure with and there are many under the spell of its call who turn their burning eyes away from the modern gale, to gaze longingly toward this enchanting realm where time is not, where months are reckoned only by the flowers or fruit they bring and believe that if once they might enter the Vale of Kashmir, there they would find their lost youth and lost dreams.
The dying Mughal Emperor Jahangir, when asked if he desired anything, closed his eyes as if to dream of the fair land he loved, as he made answer,” Only Kashmir”.
Possessing every variety of climate and scenery and an equally varied past, Kashmir has failed to satisfy the visitor who has been willing to undertake the long and arduous journey, whether in the old days when the Delhi Emperors traversed the difficult route on horseback and palanquins with their splendid retinue, or as now, when the modern tourist reaches the promised land by passing from the hot and dusty railway train to the unreliable motor- car or jotling tonga.

HISTORY OF SRINAGAR (1846-1947) A STUDY IN SOCIO-CULTURAL CHANGE BY MOHAMMAD ISHAQ KHAN

The focus of this book is on the interplay of several social, economic, cultural and political forces that led to the transition of Srinagar from the medieval to the modern age during 1890-1947. The ideas which constituted public opinion in Srinagar during this period have been critically analyzed. The emerging thesis is not simply modernization of Srinagar but the historic struggle of the educated elite in preserving what may be considered of permanent and abiding value in Kashmiri culture and to assimilate from the forces of modernization what was necessary for building up the “New Kashmir”
The importance of history of Srinagar, first published in 1978, lies in great critical acclaim that it received in academic journals of international repute, national news magazines & the local Urdu press.

Formerly  Professor and Head of the Department of History, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Dean Academic at Kashmir University, Mohammad Ishaq Khan is presently Director, Centre for Kashmir Studies at the same University.

SUFIS OF KASHMIR BY MOHAMMAD ISHAQ KHAN

Based on a critical examination of Persian sources, the Sufis of Kashmir contains authentic biographical sketches of the contemplatives and spiritual masters who profoundly shaped Kashmiri society during the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. Sufism’s historical achievement in Kashmir lay in furnishing the sheet- anchor which would not simply hold the Kashmiri Muslim community fast to the shrines, but more importantly to the fundamentals of Islam. The remarkable unity of purpose and action displayed by the Sufis as embodiments of inner and social stability is not simply a spiritual, but more than that, a historical legacy bequeathed by them to Kashmir.
Mohammad Ishaq Khan is a historian, poet and columnist. Formerly Dean academic, Dean Social Sciences and Shaikhu’l- Alam Chair at Kashmir University, he was Leverhulme Senior Research Fellow at Oxford centre for Islamic Studies. Author of several widely read/reviewed books, his numerous scholarly papers related to Islam and society in Kashmir have been published in academic journals of international repute.  Major edited anthologies of OUP and Manohar concerning Islam contain reprints of some of his seminal contributions.
Hailes as the ‘philosopher poet’ with ‘eclectic vision’ of Kashmir’s ‘glorious past’ and uncertain future I the prestigious literary journal of India (Indian Literature journal of India (Indian Literature, Sahitya Akademi, May/June 2010, 257), his fresh collection of poems titled Demystifying Sufism and Freedom in Kashmir is likely to be published in the near future.
