This book stands primarily as a textbook for the students of Sociology at under graduate level. It is essentially composed of two parts, one deal with Social Thought and second is concerned with the Indian Social Systems. The first part of this book is composed of the chapters of introduction to Sociology, Sociology and related disciplines, Distinctive Sociological views of Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Vilfredo Pareto, C H Cooley and R K Merton. Prominent views of these core sociologists have been presented in this part of the book. The second part of this book deals with the structure of Indian society. It looks at the structural and dynamic aspects of the Indian society. Its focus has been on the themes such as composition of Indian society, concept and features of caste, approaches to the study of Indian society and urban, rural and tribal societies in India. In this way, the book provides a comprehensive introduction of the important topics of social thought and structure of Indian society.
Dr Shabnam Ara is Assistant Professor in Sociology and is presently working in A.S College, Srinagar, J&K. She was born in a village Ruhu Anantnag. After completion of her graduation from University of Kashmir, in 1996 and post graduation in Sociology from AMU, Aligarh, in 1999 and did her Ph.D from Ranchi University, Ranchi, in 2008. Her first book “Impact of Militancy on women in Kashmir” is first serious and scientific attempt to analyze this complex phenomenon through empiricity. She has written many research articles in national and international journals.
