KASHMIR UNDER THE SHADOW OF GUN BY RAO FARMAN ALI

Kashmir is to be understood in the broader perspective by the people of India and Pakistan in general – the world community in particular. The solution of this vexed issue should be tried in terms of choices not the pedagogies, sought by two warring nation as (India – Pakistan) – principle parties to the dispute but Kashmiris being the prime party rather sine quo non towards the solution. Several resolutions have been passed in United Nations Security Council, which are the bedrocks for defining the disputed nature of Kashmir and it is India who took the matter to United Nations but naïve Kashmiris (people of Jammu and Kashmir) had always been and are still the first causality to the oldest existing dispute in South Asia, which has pushed India and Pakistan to three conventional and similar number of non- conventional wars, including high altitude war of Kargil. No matter, solution to disputed Kashmir is just like a needle in the haystack but still structured dialogue is the only way forward.
India on 11 May 1998, Monday detonated three nuclear bombs at Pokhran (II), declaring itself as the nuclear capable state, which was treated as serious threat by its immediate neighbor (Pakistan). In Response Pakistan on Thursday, 28 May 19998 exploded five nuclear bombs at Chagai (Baluchistan) thus both commenced a new arms race in South Asia.
This book brings to the fore, the circumstances which shoved Kashmir is to come with an extreme and home – grown resistance struggles as nonconformists for demanding Independence. Henceforth, this book along with Case Study of AI Fatah has been attempted in an isolated political or ideological propensity to maintain the neutrality. This account is a useful reference for policy makers, students of Journalism, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political and Military Sciences, and above all for the students of history.
Rao Farman Ali, born in a village Hanji Danter, Anantnag,  South Kashmir, is a professional  journalist and Editor of English newspaper “On The Track”
He is also a researcher and a wide awaked observer of Kashmir conflict. He is credited to have authored a book on Kashmir under the title – “Jammu Kashmir: Resolution through Reconciliation for Peace and Dignity.” Applying game theory and giving a mathematical approach for the solution of Kashmir. The author has presented over 20 papers in various seminars. And has inherited element of political heritage because of taking birth from a family, which has been the part of political resistance right from 1945. But the author is a political in his approach.

A CRUSADER IN KASHMIR BY ERNEST F. NEVE

The  Church of Great Britain, using the word in its widest acceptation, at all adequately heard or acted upon the call to go over and help India .? Taking India as a whole, the Church of Christ is in contact chiefly with three great groups of people- the Hindus, the Mohammedans and the depressed classes. It is common knowledge that the last group is very accessible to Christian teaching.
Both the Hindu and Muslim religions are peculiarly resistant to the impact of Christianity. This is well known for the continued presentation of Christianity to Hindus and Muslims there is no more potent agency than the work of medical Missions.
For the very beginning we have to go back to the year 1854, when the late Rev. Robert Clark, a true missionary statesman, made an extended tour in the Mountain Kingdom. It was not until the spring of 1864 that Mr Clark really opened his campaign and started regular work in the valley of Kashmir. This was done under circumstances of extreme difficulty. In 1879 Dr. Downes had a record of just 5000 patients, with a considerable number of important operations and during that year he admitted 703 patients.
Dr. Downes, whose health had been shattered by overwork, was succeeded by Dr. Arthur Neve, who remained in charge for more than a third of the century

OUR MOON HAS BLOOD CLOTS – THE EXODUS OF THE KASHMIRI PANDITS BY RAHUL PANDITA

Rahul Pandita was fourteen years old when he was forced to leave his home in Srinagar along with his family, who were Kashmiri Pandits: the Hindu minority within a Muslim – majority Kashmir that was becoming increasingly agitated with the cries of ‘Azadi’ from India.
The heartbreaking story of Kashmir has so far been told through the prism of the brutality of the Indian State, and the pro- independence demand of separatist. But there is another part of the story that has remained unrecorded and buried.
Our Moon Has Blood Clots is the unspoken chapter in the story of Kashmir, in which it was purged of the Kashmiri Pandit community in a violent ethnic cleansing backed by Islamist militants. Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes and spend the rest of their lives in exile in their own country.
Rahul Pandita has written a deeply personal, powerful and unforgettable story of history, home and loss.
Rahul Pandita is the author of the bestselling Hello, Bastar: The Untold Story of India’s Maoist Movement, and the co – author of the critically acclaimed The Absent State. He has reported extensively from wars zones including Iraq and Sri Lanka and Kashmir and Bastar in India. In 2010, he received the International Red Cross Award for conflict reporting.
Rahul was born in the Kashmir Valley. In 1990, when his family was forced into exile, he was fourteen years old. He lives in a Delhi suburb and works as an associate editor with Open magazine.

DAUGHTERS OF THE VITASTA – A HISTORY OF KASHMIRI WOMEN FROM EARLY TIMES TO THE RESENT DAY BY PREM NATH BAJAJ

The book is to depict Kashmiri women as they lived through different periods of history, to describe their past achievements, long days of adversity and present struggle for emancipation. Contents of the book are the vignettes of outstanding women who flourished from early times in any field of social activity.
Though superficial reading of the book may give rise to revivalist tendencies, I would like to say that it is none of my desires to create a mythical golden age in which Kashmiri women achieved unsurpassable glory.
Despite the imperfections of modern social life, there is no gainsaying that today we live in a better world where both men and women find vaster opportunities and greater freedom for the unfoldment of their potentialities. Revivalism is by no means a healthy doctrine nor can its adoption contribute to prosperity of a people.
This is a pioneer work in a particular domain of literature and apt to suffer from the shortcomings usual to its kind.
Prem Nath Bajaj was born in July 1905 at Srinagar. Educated in S.P. College, he took his degree from Punjab University and entered public life in August 1930 by joining the Women’s Welfare Trust. In 1931 he was elected President of the S.D. Yuvat Sabha that year the Maharaja nominated him as a non- official member of the Grievances Enquiry Commission and the Constitutional Reforms Conference. He started the daily Vitasta in 1932 to advocate the cause of Secularism, Democracy and Freedom.
Bazaz is the author of several books including Inside Kashmir (1942), Azad Kashmir (1951) and The History of Struggle for Freedom in Kashmir (1954). He has written a number of treaties and booklets in English and Urdu on Economic, Political, Cultural and social problems of Kashmir.

KASHMIR DOCUMENTATION – PANDITS IN EXILE – BY PANUN KASHMIR MOVEMENT (PKM)

The National Human Rights Commission has been finding itself called upon to play enlarging role in the current situation. More than five years after the start of the militant violence in Kashmir, the commission has been receiving a number of cases and complaints involving the human rights violations there. This week, the Panun Kashmir Movement (PKM) presented a pile of documents to the NHRC listing the violations of human rights through acts of terrorism. The documents list the social and psychological trauma their community has been put through as a result of these happenings.
The PKM also took up with the Commission matters regarding instances of alleged bias and discrimination demonstrated by the State apparatus. This concerned cases of promotions, transfers and education of children. Describing the National Human Rights Commission as a sacred product of an Act of Parliament, it underlined the high expectations the affected people had from the NHRC.
It was in 1994 that Panun Kashmir Movemnt (PKM), a frontline organization began to work purposefully, and in right earnest, in different field. Its multidimensional activities are documented in a voluminous material collected over the years, which reflects the persistent efforts of the organization in the human rights, socio- economic and political areas, involving a vast spectrum of activities like political resolutions passed from time to time; interactions through correspondence and interface sessions with various organizations, political personages and individuals of consequence, inside and outside the  country, focusing on the human rights violations of the Kashmiri Pandit Community: the genesis of the forced mass exodus of 1989- 90 with its disastrous ramifications for the community: series of communications with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the latter’s positive responses: court cases fought; the callous indifference and apathy of the State government; exposition of the violations of human rights committed against the Kashmiri Pandits at various for a nationally as well as internationally.

WE WERE AND WE WILL BE - STORIES ON KASHMIR BY PARINEETA KHAR

The present book is the manifestation of inundating currents of ferocious magnitude ebbing in my own psyche. I have not chronicled the history of atrocities meted out to Pandits, neither did I enumerate the gruesome killings of the people of my community at the hands of terrorists.
My tales allude to circumstances of distinct nature, some strange, others intriguing. These stories are an attempt to depict how terrorism affected and influenced all of us, one or the other way
The last two stories were written for my own children, almost bragging about with my siblings, which they have been deprived of.
My stories depict a celebration of life- a continuation of like. We are the children of legendary eleven families who tenaciously refused to accept anything, other than battagi (being a Kashmiri Pandit). I have an uncanny belief: the tyranny of bigots will abate; the contempt and conceit will end sometime, somewhere. The bruised and pulped up battagi will come out of the debris of ruined mansions, peep out of the heaped up rubble and stand erect again. Hence, “We were and we will be.”
Parineeta Khar nee Zutshi was brought up in an extended family where joys and sorrows, even the illness and career of a child was a shared affair. Although she is a science graduate, the penchant for English literature stood in her stead. She came out with honors in English literature. She further accomplished the same subject at the Kashmir University, Srinagar in 1976.
Her restless existence had no time to grow as she got married during her university days. Her husband’s career tossed her on to the far off lanes in Paris.
With the peal rush of motherhood abating the demand for her other roles getting fulfilled- she had time to reminisce. The stored up memories gushed out in a deluge. She started writing short stories for local newspaper. Her first book on The Shores of the Vitasta was  published by the Writer’s Workshop Calcutta in 1994.
Parineeta lives with her family in Hyderabad for last twenty- five years.  As a part time teacher, she teaches English Literature at high school level.

THE EXILED – STORY OF THE INDIGENOUS GROUP OF PEOPLE OF KASHMIR VALLEY BY BANSI LAL KOUL & OMKAR NATH PANDITA

In modern times Kashmiri Pandits have not made any serious attempt to analyses the events in a systematic manner which was taking place around them. These events were bound to have profound and lasting effect on their living conditions in their native land – the valley of Kashmir. In fact most of these events were conspicuously unidirectional in nature. This indigenous group of people of Kashmir valley was on the receiving end, being a minuscule minority, living in a dispersed condition. They were battered through a series of violent waves in modern times which were caused by Kashmiri Muslim majoritarianism in 1931, 1967, 1986, 1989- 90 and onwards. The net effect of these events was the extermination of this indigenous group of people from its land of origin. Now they are living a refugee life at various places outside the valley within India and abroad.
Mr Bansi Lal Koul was born in Srinagar after his graduation he joined state government. He worked in different departments and rose to secretary in revenue and finance department in Jammu and Kashmir. He has an in-depth knowledge of Kashmir’s cultural tradition and history.
Professor Omkar Nath Pandita was born in Baramullah in Kashmir after his post graduation in political science; he joined Baramullah Government College and became Professor of political science. He is well known political thinker and political analyst of Kashmir.

ICONS OF KASHMIR IDENTITY BY ZAHID G. MUHAMMAD

Kashmiryat  a new cliché was added to the political lexicon of Kashmir in early nineties of the past century. This word that sounds alien to etymology of Kashmir language found some ready takers in the government and made it look as subnationalism and some projected it as syncretism of Sufism and Shaivism . Many used it as one word substitution for Kashmir identity and many others preferred to use it as a synonym for Reshi tradition of Kashmir. In their enthusiasm some have been making efforts to project great missionaries like Mir Syed Ali Hamadni who played pioneering role in the spread of Islam and bringing socio- economic revolution in Kashmir as a hermits. The book  based on papers presented by the author in various seminars is not an in depth study into Kashmir identity bit it provides a perspective that would help in understanding the socio – political dimensions of what is termed as Kashmir identity. The book also provides slits to peep through at the cultural and literary traditions of Kashmir that have waxed emperors and soldiers lyrical. The book also provides an insight into the urges and aspirations of people of this fabulous land. It also provides an understanding into economic potentialities of this land that has given the subcontinent like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru a scholar like Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri, a poet like Iqbal and politician like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It also opens windows to look into a various facets of changes that occurred in Kashmir after the advent of Islam and that gave Kashmir as identity of its own. The book also looks into the literary and cultural heritage of Kashmir.

WITH PEN AND RIFLE IN KASHMIR BY OTTO ROTHFIELD

More than half of this book was written with no idea of publishing. According to the author it was meant only to inform his wife of what he was doing and seeing and thinking during a journey in search of support and health. The book is therefore without ornament or elaboration. All it can claim is to be genuine.

The province of Kishtwar, situated between Kashmir and Chamba on the way to Simla, and rules by H.H.the Mahyaraja of Kashmir and Jammu is not only very little known, but is in itself extremely interesting. Its scenery is almost unique, it’s in habitations are undeciphered and its support is exceptional. Therefore, that a record not only of facts but also of reflections not merely of support but also of impressions, may be of interest, especially to those who know and love the Himalayas. The ethnological remarks which the author have included in this book may prove of some little value to future students.

KASHMIR CONVOLUTED HISTORIES BY AMIT SRIVASTAVA

The book emphasizes that understanding others viewpoint is as important as asserting owns. The solution to Kashmir dispute is possible if all parties agree that their stakes should build up without anyone’s dilution. It requires the modernity and innovation to formally resolve the dispute and it is possible and easier than resolving the Middle East dispute.
Amit is a graduate from Indian Institute of technology, Kanpur. He writes for the World Affairs, The Northlines and Merinews. Earlier he wrote for Rising Kashmir too.

RAJATARANGINI OF JONARAJA – TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH BY JOGESH CHUNDER DUTT

Jonaraja’s Rajatarangini is the second in the series of Kashmir chronicles, next to the work of Kalhana. The Kashmirian tradition of writing, chronicles was not discontinued at the death Kalhana but was carried further by his disciples. The Rajatarangini of Jonaraja covers the period from 1150 A.D to 1459 A.D of the Kashmir History. This period witnessed the advent of the Muslims in Kashmir and conversion of the majority of Hindus into Isalm. Jonaraja who was a historian to the true sense of the term and a Sanskrit poet of very high order has vividly described the decline of Hindu civilization of Kashmir. He describes without any prejudice , the Muslimes regimes, mentions the contributions of the good among them and fearlessly criticizes the oppressors and persecutors. He does not even try to conceal the degeneration among the contemporary Hindus. His work is a valuable source book of the history of medieval Kashmir. The present publication is the only complete English translation of Joanaraja’s work, made available after a long time.

FAITH & FRENZY BY K.L CHOWDHURY

Faith & Frenzy is a collection of short stories that brings to the reader the intimate details of forgotten Kashmiris of al hues, caught in the quagmire of terror and murky politics, and weighed down by the historical burden of a long confrontation between India and Pakistan. Their stories have remained untold, submerged as they remain under layers of shady rhetoric and politics of deceit.
Most, but not all, stories take place in a background of escalating militancy that brought terror, insecurity and mayhem into the lives of people and dealt a deathblow to the tradition of amity, tolerance and peaceful living that had defined Kashmiri life over significant period of history.
These are stories of reconciliation and reaffirmation of religious diversity and of how thousands of Kashmiris, mostly Pandits, were forced into exodus from the valley to the plains of India- their lives before and after the exodus and their identity crisis.
A unique feature of many of these stories is that they are discovered and revealed through the lens of a doctor who is also a keen observer of a society in flux. The author himself is the narrator of the stories. More importantly, he is also involved as one of the key participants in most of them. His initial contact with the main characters often begins in his role as a physician.  He receives them as patients and while providing his professional services, he finds himself entwined into the intricacies, uncertainties and struggles of their lives. The stories peep deep into their lives, and probe inside their souls. Above all, these stories of the universal human circumstances
Born in Kashmir, Kundan Lal Chowdhury is a physician, poet and writer. He has four published anthologies including a travelogue and was conferred the Best Book Award for Excellence in Literature by the J&K Academy of Arts, Culture and Language for The Enchanting World of Infants.

KASHMIR SHAVAISM – A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY, LITERATURE AND SHAIVA PHILOSOPHY OF KASHMIR BY JAGADISH CHANDRA CHATTERJI

The first beginning of what has been called Kashmir Shavaism’, to distinguish it from other forms of Shavaism known and still practiced in different parts of India, may have to be the Shiva Sutras. Its teachings and practices are given, in the literature of the system, the distinctive name of Trika – shasana, Trika – Shastra or simply Trikas and are often referred to as the Rahasya- Sampradaya while Shavaism in general is spoken of as Shiva – Shasana or Shivagama.

Although the Trika form of Shaivaism would seem to have made its first appearance in Kashmir at the beginning of the ninth or perhaps towards the end of the eighth century of the Christian Era, Shiva Shasana or Shivagama that is Shavaism as such, is far older than its date. Indeed we may have to trace its beginnings in the Vedic Revelations. In Kashmir itself- where even the most orthodox followers of the Shivagama admit that the Trika – Shasana first appeared (or as they out it, reappeared) abou the beginning of the ninth Christian century- Shivagama is regarded as of high antiquity, indeed of eternal existence like the Vedas.

In 1811 Moorcroft travelled extensively among the northern sub- continent in serach of better breeding stock. To Lucknow, the capital of Oudh, and to Benares (then still part of Maratha Territory), but Moorcroft failed to acquire the ideal breeding horses that he sought. In Benares he learned that Bukhara was  rumoured to have “ the greatest horse market in the world.” Moorcroft recruited a Persian named Mir Izzat- Allah to make a scouting trip to Bukhara and map out the route. He also learned that fine breeding horses might be found in Tibet.
Moorcroft continued his journeys; Kashmir was reached on 03 November 1822, Jalalabad on 04 June 1824, Kabul on 20 June, and Bokhara on 25 February 1825.
At Andkhoy, in Afghan Turkestan, Moorcroft was seized with fever, of which he died on the 27 August 1825, with Trebeck surviving him only a few days. But according to the Abbe Hue, Moorcroft reached Lhasa in 1826, and lived there twelve years, being assassinated on his way back to India in 1838.
In 1841, Moorcroft’s papers were obtained by the Asiatic Society and published, under the editorship of H.H Wilson, under the title of Travels in Himalayan Provinces of Hindustan and the Punjab, in Ladakh and Kashmir, in Peshawar, Kabul, Kunduz and Bokhara, from 1819 to 1825.
William Moorcroft (1767 – 27 August 1825), English explorer, was born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, the illegitimate son of Ann Moorcroft, daughter of a local farmer. He was Baptised in 1767 in St Peter & St Paul the Parish Church of Ormskirk where there is a commemorative plaque to his life.
While employed by the East India Company Moorcroft travelled extensively throughout the Himalayas, Tibet and central Asia, eventually reaching Bukhara, in present day Uzbekistan.
